Hillside Cottage was built in 1906 as a residence for the school's superintendent, Dr. Fernald and his family. Prior to this year, they lived at Waverley Hall, the school's administration building. Hillside's location was rather remote at the time, built in a far northern section of the campus and distanced from the institutional buildings, except for perhaps East Dowling, built the same year. Its hilltop location commanded a view of the campus, with a curved driveway and a large garage located in back. Hillside Cottage was last used as a residence for adult patients.
Architectural Description
Hillside is a large, shingled Queen Anne/Colonial Revival-style structure that rises three stories from a fieldstone foundation to a gambrel roof with modillion cornice and large center chimney. The main entry with fanlight and open Tuscan porch is centered on the south gable end. It is now approached by a concrete handicapped ramp. Windows contain 15/1 sash except in the gables, where the upper sash is diamond pane. Preston was the architect. A fair amount of its original interior remain intact, including fireplaces with mantels, glass partitions, wainscotting and chandeliers.
