History

Opening its doors in 1952 as the Thom Hospital, this building was dedicated to delivering medical care to the school's residents. It contained a fully-equipped operating room, eliminating the need for major surgical procedures to be performed at Metropolitan State Hospital. Beds were provided for patients needing full-time medical support staff. It was later named Marquardt Nursing Center, named after Father Henry Marquardt, the Catholic chaplain at Fernald who championed for better end-of-life care and appropriate burial services. The hospital was one of the last buildings to be shuttered when the institution was dissolved.
